The Brock University Faculty Association (BUFA) is deeply distressed after learning from a recent CBC News report that the University’s Human Resources Department instructed a student to keep quiet about sexual harassment on campus. It should never be the responsibility of victims of sexual harassment and violence to protect the reputation of the University.
BUFA has long maintained that the University’s existing Respectful Work and Learning Environment Policy is ineffective.
We believe that students, faculty, and staff have a right to a learning environment and workplace that is free from harassment and that processes and mechanisms must be in place to guarantee that right. BUFA strongly encourages students and all members of the University community to report incidences of sexual harassment and violence. Students seeking support should contact the Brock Student Sexual Violence Support Centre at http://www.asaferbrock.org.
